Bapco achieves safety milestone

A historical and outstanding achievement of 15 million hours without a single lost time injury was achieved by Bapco employees and contractors on November 17. This is the first time that Bapco has reached this safety milestone in its history, which represents 18 months of operation with no injuries requiring a Bapco or contractor employee to miss a working day.

In an internal memo addressed to employees and contractors, Bapco management congratulated all involved for living Bapco EHS values and applauded them for their dedication and contribution to the achievement of such a significant milestone, which is in line with Bapco’s goal of an incident and injury free workplace.

At an event held at the Refinery yesterday, Bapco’s Chief Executive Dr. Pete Bartlett conveyed the congratulations and appreciation of Dr. Abdulhussain Mirza, Minister of Energy and Bapco’s Chairman of the Board Shaikh Mohamed bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Khalifa on this tremendous achievement.

Dr. Bartlett said, “Setting ourselves such milestones is not only about achieving and celebrating them, but it is about ensuring that all Bapco employees and contractors go home safe and sound every day to their beloved ones. These milestones are not achieved by chance, but rather through decades of hard work, comprehensive standards and processes, and by the staff and contractors believing this is the right way to work.”

Bapco’s Deputy Chief Executive and Chairman of the Environment, Health, Safety Committee Ebrahim Talib remarked: “It’s reflective of the existence of strong EHS culture, comprehensive and sound safe work practices, the desire to ensure friends and colleagues stay safe at all times while at work. This achievement is also a clear demonstration of how effective Bapco’s Operational Excellence Management System is in identifying and controlling risks.”

Bapco’s next milestone is set at 18 million hours without a lost time injury.

“I am confident that we will attain it if we remain alert in adhering to safe work procedures and practices. We’ll continue our emphasis on environment, health and safety not because we ‘have to,’ but because we want to at the work environment or elsewhere in line with the directives of our Wise Leadership,” Talib added.
