Bahrain tops the list of nations with the world's most calorie-consuming people, according to a recent study. The figures released by the information platform OurWorldInData of the University of Oxford are based on the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), where the Bahraini population came in first with 4012 calories per day per person.
In second place came the United States with 3868 calories, followed by Ireland with 3850 calories, Belgium (3824 calories), Turkey (3762 calories), Austria (3738 calories), Germany (3647 calories), Italy (3620 calories), Qatar (3609 calories), and Romania (3599 calories), according to the British Daily Mail.
Positions from 11 to 20 are as follows:
France (3581 calories)
Israel (3570 calories)
Canada (3,569 calories)
Poland (3538 calories)
Algeria (3519 calories)
Luxembourg (3497 calories)
Portugal (3489 calories)
Norway (3472 calories)
Montenegro (3468 calories)
Holland (3460 calories)
The data was based on the total food purchased per household on average for each country and does not necessarily mean calories consumed, nor does it take into account the amount of waste.
The study explained that calorie consumption has been rising for decades globally amid the emergence of fast food and processed foods.
Researchers warn that excessive consumption of such foods leads to obesity, with one billion people now suffering from it, compared to 175 million in the 1970s.
Excess weight can lead to associated health problems, including high blood pressure, heart disease, and even Alzheimer's disease.
The US Food and Drug Administration says people should consume around 2,000 calories a day on average, while the UK's Public Health Service says women should get around 2,000 calories a day but men should consume 2,500.
