The British Ambassador to Bahrain, Roderick Drummond, expressed his appreciation for Bahrain’s exclusion from the list of Human Rights Priority Countries in the Annual Human Rights and Democracy Report published by the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office of Britain.
In a statement to Al Ayam newspaper, Drummond said that this decision signifies the sustained and systematic progress made by Bahrain in various human rights areas over the course of many years.
He stressed the United Kingdom’s support for promoting human rights through cooperation with Bahrain. The ambassador stated, "The close and longstanding relationship between the UK and Bahrain enables genuine and open dialogue on numerous fronts, including human rights.
The FCDO remains dedicated to supporting ongoing human rights reforms in Bahrain." The report commended the parliamentary elections held in Bahrain in 2022, which were closely monitored by civil society institutions within the country. It said the elections were conducted soundly and in an organised manner.
The report highlighted an increase in voter turnout, particularly among women from various governorates and regions of Bahrain. Furthermore, the report emphasised Bahrain’s commitment to its longstanding traditions of fostering tolerance and religious coexistence among different sects, citing initiatives implemented both domestically and internationally.
