As Bahrain faces its highest and most extreme temperatures at the height of summer, nutritionists urge people to eat foods that are high in electrolytes to increase energy and keep their bodies cool.

Summer can be draining and dehydrating when your body is exposed to such extreme temperatures. Body temperatures rise because of our surroundings of rising temperatures, and as a result, this can lead to tiredness, irritation, restlessness, and dehydration.

Because of this, nutrition awareness should increase to adjust your body appropriately. And when the heat is at its height, this is the best time to indulge in your favourite fruits and vegetables, the best foods to eat during the summer to keep you hydrated.

"During the summer months, it is best to consume foods that are high in electrolytes," Moayyed Feroze, a nutritionist and top health coach in Bahrain, told The Daily Tribune. "There are many fruits and vegetables that are vitamin-enriched foods yet tasty enough to satisfy our appetite," he said.

Melons

The top fitness coach said that watermelon is a great source of water and potassium, which are both important for staying hydrated in the summer. It is also a great source of vitamin C, which helps boost the immune system.

Melons like cantaloupe, honeydew, and muskmelon are refreshing options that are high in water and potassium and can be enjoyed when cooling down on a hot summer day.

Vegetables

Fresh vegetables such as spinach and kale are great sources of calcium and magnesium, which are important electrolytes. Spinach is also a good source of Vitamin K, which is important for blood clotting, and kale is a great source of vitamin A, which is important for vision.

Tips for quick hydration

When your body is exposed to intense temperatures, it can be challenging to gauge just how much fluid your body is losing. And during these temperatures, our bodies release fluid in the form of sweat, which again can make it challenging to notice just how much fluid we are losing.

Moayyed shared that the best beverages to drink when you are exposed to such heat are lemon water, coconut water, oral hydration solution, fruit juice, and herbal tea. "These beverages are the best choices to keep your body hydrated, but you should keep these beverages available at all times for the best effect," he said.

He pointed out that pre-making the hydrating beverages in batches will make them easier to consume after a hot summer day. "Preparing big batches of ORS and storing them in the fridge is a good way to prepare in case you get dehydrated while outside.

Also, freezing fruit juice into ice cubes and placing them in your beverages is another way to retain hydration," he said. Highlighting this, he said that you should always keep a water bottle with you during the day.
