Bahrain-US dialogue affirms freedom of navigation

The Third Bahrain-US Strategic Dialogue concluded on a high note, with both Bahrain and the United States reiterating their commitment to safeguarding freedom of navigation in international waters while condemning acts that threaten this vital aspect of global trade.

A joint communique was released by Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Antony J. Blinken, the Secretary of State, reaffirming their unwavering commitment to bilateral and regional security, mutual economic prosperity, and the principles that uphold the international order.

The statement emphasised the significance of ensuring the safe passage of commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Both countries expressed their shared commitment to deterring and confronting threats to Bahrain's security while enhancing peace and stability in the region.

Four working groups

During the discussions held both virtually and in person in June and July, four working groups were formed to address various issues. Notably, decisions were made to advance the US-Bahrain Free Trade Agreement and continue discussions on trade-related matters, telecommunications, tourism, and new initiatives supporting energy efficiency and clean energy sources.

The two nations also emphasized their joint efforts to combat climate change by promoting the deployment of clean energy and innovative carbon capture technologies. They also discussed the upcoming COP 28 in the UAE.

US Trade zone

In line with supporting clean energy, both sides expressed their commitment to developing the US Trade Zone and signalled their intention to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the Export-Import Bank of the United States and the Bahrain Ministry of Finance and National Economy to facilitate EXIM financing for strategic projects in Bahrain.

Education and cultural cooperation were also high on the agenda, with plans to expand opportunities for Bahraini students to study in the United States and participate in US exchanges.

The Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities and the Department of State intend to sign a Statement of Intent in the Field of Cultural Heritage to strengthen cultural exchanges.

Abraham Accords

Regarding the Abraham Accords, both Bahrain and the United States reiterated their commitment to further regional cooperation within the Negev Forum working groups, particularly focusing on regional security and health working groups.

Trafficking in persons

The talks also covered countering trafficking in persons, with recognition of Bahrain maintaining Tier 1 status in the annual US Department of State Trafficking in Persons Report for the sixth consecutive year.

Additionally, Dr. Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, the Foreign Affairs Ministry’s Political Affairs Undersecretary, and Derek Chollet, the Counsellor of the US Department of State, co-chaired a political cooperation working group within the framework of the Third Bahrain-US Strategic Dialogue.

Derek Chollet expressed his country's keenness to enhance political, economic, and security cooperation and partnership with Bahrain. He praised Bahrain's diplomatic efforts in establishing security, peace, and stability in the Middle East, as well as promoting dialogue among different religions, civilizations, and cultures. He conveyed his best wishes for Bahrain's continued security, progress, and prosperity.
