Over 400 kilometres of the main road networks in Bahrain will undergo a comprehensive risk assessment programme soon.

The move, according to the Ministry of Works, is part of a project to assess the safety of the highways in the Kingdom. The project aims at laying the foundation for future strategies, plans, and safety interventions for highways by adopting an evidence-based approach to ensure the safety of Bahraini highways for all road users.

The assessment as part of the Bahrain Road Safety Assessment Programme (BahrainRAP) will follow the standards set by the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP). For which the Ministry of Works has also launched a tender.

Dyar Hajet Engineering and Saudi Tech for Engineering Consultants have submitted their technical bids, and the tender board is currently evaluating them. The selected bidder will be responsible for conducting a comprehensive risk assessment and producing a star rating and risk mapping for the main road networks in Bahrain.

Moreover, the winning bidder will be required to develop training and investment plans incorporating all recommended safety measures to enhance and upgrade the road networks in the Kingdom. As Bahrain's road infrastructure is continually growing, this endeavour becomes increasingly vital in ensuring the safety of its population.
