His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa issued Decree 71/2023, introducing amendments to Decree 61/2021, which established the General Sports Authority (GSA) in Bahrain.
The decision was made following the Prime Minister's proposal and the Cabinet's approval, signifying a significant development in the sports sector.
With the amended decree, the General Sports Authority now directly assumes crucial responsibilities and mandates, including overseeing private entities operating in the sports sector as per the provisions of Law 21/1989.
Moreover, the Authority is entrusted with regulating fundraising for public purposes, implementing sports plans and projects, supporting private sports entities, and exercising financial oversight of sports federations.
In addition, the Chairman of the General Sports Authority takes on duties that mirror those of the minister in charge of private entities in the sports sector as per Law 21/1989. The Chairman is also responsible for overseeing sports sabbaticals and fundraising regulations while ensuring compliance with Law 8/2021 on sports professionalism.
