The popular 'Rubyan' (Shrimp) has finally made a comeback to Bahraini tables, owing to the lifting of the six-month fishing restriction intended to rebuild marine supplies.
The abundance of this seafood, which is now available in markets, has attracted many who enjoy eating it.
The Manama Central Market stands out as a top location in the Kingdom among the sought-after locations to purchase seafood.
The ban was in effect from February 1 to August 1 with the intention of facilitating the recovery of Bahrain’s marine stocks and promoting the sustainable development of marine resources.
However, the lifting of the ban does not imply a disregard for Resolution No. 205 of 2018, which prohibits marine fishing using bottom trawl nets (carafe) in the Kingdom’s territorial waters.
Customers have expressed satisfaction at being able to purchase various types of high-quality shrimp at enticing prices during the fishing ban period. The reported price range now stands between BD2 and BD3 per kilo, contingent on the shrimp sizes.
Some customers have even found small-sized shrimp available for BD1. Officials have hailed the success of the ban, noting a reduction in illegal fishing activities and attempts to import and sell shrimp from external sources.
