A private affair!
Around half-a-million expats are currently working in Bahrain’s private sector establishments, revealed Labour and Social Development Minister Jameel Humaidan here yesterday. “Statistics until June 2015 showed that there are 4,66,524 expats working in the private sector,” he said.
Citing the data of the General Organisation for Social Insurance (GOSI), the Minister said about 89,592 Bahrainis were working in the private sector, adding that “an annual increase of three per cent has been observed for Bahrainis and a five per cent increase for expats.”
The statistics showed that more men were working in Bahrain’s private establishments, with 4,33,893 male expats, who are currently employed in the private sector, and 32,631 females. As for Bahrainis, 61,213 workers are males and the remaining 28,379 are females.
Humaidan revealed the statistics in his reply to a parliamentary query that was submitted earlier this year by MP Jamal Dawood.
The MP asked the Minister about the numbers of Bahrainis and expats working in the private sector, and the Ministry’s plans to integrate Bahrainis into this vital sector.
“Within the Ministry’s endeavours to launch initiatives that aim at creating job opportunities for Bahrainis in the private sector, several projects were commenced, such as the national employment programme (2001–2003), the national employment project in 2005, wages enhancement project and university graduates rehabilitation and employment project (2009-2014),” the Minister said in his reply, which will be reviewed before the Council of Representatives on Tuesday.
Humaidan also confirmed that the Ministry was currently running number of programmes and projects to rehabilitate, train and employ more than 10, 000 Bahraini jobseekers in the private sector.
