Steps to begin the Healthy City Project in Bahrain's Capital Governorate were discussed during a meeting of the Health Cities Committee with governorate officials, chaired by Deputy Capital Governor Hassan Abdullah Al Madani.
They reviewed the process of implementing the World Health Organisation (WHO)-approved standards for health cities as well as following up on the tasks carried out by each concerned directorate.
Umm Al-Hassam and Manama have obtained accreditation as healthy cities in a short period of time, thanks to the cooperation and coordination between the various concerned authorities, which was commended by the WHO.
Last July, the Capital Governorate launched the Healthy City Project programme in cooperation with the Ministry of Health and the WHO after the successes achieved by the WHO’s adoption of Um Al Hassam as a healthy city in 2018, followed by Manama in 2021 as the first healthy capital in the Middle East region.
Al Madani confirmed that the Health Cities Committee in the governorate has acquired sufficient experience in the mechanisms of implementing the project. He praised all relevant authorities’ keen interest in the pioneering civilised project, indicating its willingness to advance the development and establish Bahrain as a regional and international leader.
The Deputy Capital Governor pointed out that the key to the Capital Governorate’s success is that the projects and initiatives are compliant with the standards of the WHO, namely Green Capital, Manama Entrepreneurship Week, and the summer activities of the youth, in addition to the Capital Governorate’s document for voluntary work.
He emphasised that these programmes promote public health, empower youth in the capital, and involve members of the capital’s community and environment.
