Call for car stunting tracks

In a bid to curb illegal automobile stunting, which is apparently popular among the Bahraini youth, lawmakers are voting a proposal on Tuesday to establish a car stunting track for amateurs.

As reported earlier, MP Jamal Dawood proposed constructing a specialised arena to accommodate motor shows and stunts, after complaints and accidents related to them have spiralled up in the Kingdom lately.

The proposal was submitted by the legislator to the council’s Foreign Affairs, National Security and Defence Committee, which studied it, consulted the concerned authorities about it and finally approved it. The proposal will be reviewed before the council this Tuesday for voting.

According to Dawood, establishing such a place for the youth would protect them and contribute in lessening accidents and complaints related to automobile stunting in Bahrain, as many youth gather and perform these stunts on public roads and in residential areas.

He said earlier, “Aiming at developing and supporting Bahraini youth’s potentials and talents, by creating activities that suit their capabilities, I present this proposal to establish a strip of asphalt track that provides them with adequate space to perform their motorsport skills and hobbies.”

In his presentation to the committee, the MP stated that the track should be initially around 300 meters long and 50 meters wide.

“It should be surrounded by a three-meter high sand wall to isolate it from the surrounding areas and protect the spectators. The arena should operate twelve hours a day (2 pm–2am) and should be supervised and regulated by the General Directorate of Traffic. Fees must not exceed BD3 for participants and BD1 for spectators,” he added.

Traffic Directorate supports, Youth and Sports rejects the demand

In their reply to the committee’s queries in regards to proposal, the General Directorate of Traffic in Interior Ministry explained that implementing the proposal comes outside their area of authority. However, the ministry confirmed that both Traffic and Civil Defence General Directorates are ready to provide technical supports in terms of traffic and safety conditions.

On the other hand, the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports expressed that  the goals of the proposal are already in existence in the Kingdom, referring the Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) – the home of motorsports in the Middle East – and the multiple activities organised in it throughout the year, adding that these activities are the same as the ones mentioned in the proposal.
