A five-rider Bahrain senior men’s national cycling team is currently in Spain conducting high-altitude training in preparation for their upcoming participation at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, starting next month.

The Bahrainis are in the municipality of Navacerrada near Madrid, which lies at an elevation of 1,203 metres.

The team is composed of Ahmed Madan, Ahmed Naser, Mansoor Jawad, Sayed Alawi and Hussain Mohammed.

Their training is being supervised by Bahrain Cycling Association sport director Axel Costa.

As part of their camp, Jawad, Alawi and Mohammed took part last week in the Trofeo de Membrilla, a ride over 116 kilometres.

The nationals have also been taking part in other races in the area. Cycling is one of the 19 sports Bahrain will be participating in at the Hangzhou Asiad.

The others are athletics, handball, boxing, judo, weightlifting, wrestling, jiu-jitsu, rowing, shooting, table tennis, taekwondo, sailing, basketball, football, volleyball, E-sports, cricket and equestrian.

Cycling in Hangzhou will feature four categories, including road cycling, in which Bahrain is participating, track cycling, mountain biking and BMX.

The road cycling events are set to include an individual time trial and a road race.

The action will take place in Chun’an Jieshou Sports Centre Cycling Road Course from 3 to 5 October, where the athletes will compete for four gold medals.

The multi-sport Asiad, which is scheduled for 23 September to 8 October, features over 12,400 of the continent’s top sportsmen and women, participating in 482 events across 40 sports.
