Bahrain cemented its position yet again as the premier destination for expatriates in the Middle East with a ground-breaking decision yesterday.
The Kingdom now allows its vast expatriate community, , numbering over 1.1 million of the total population of 1.8 million, to renew their residency and work permits from anywhere in the world before expiration.
The decision was announced yesterday by Shaikh Hisham bin Abdulrahman Al Khalifa, the Interior Ministry Undersecretary for Nationality, Passports, and Residence Affairs (NPRA).
The service is available to expats working in both commercial and government sectors, as well as registered labourers and domestic workers.
The facility is offered in coordination with the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA).
Accordingly, residency permits can be renewed through the National Portal of Bahrain and work permits through the Expatriate Management System or official LMRA channels.
LMRA CEO Nibras Mohammed Talib said that the service allows employers to renew their employees' work permits online from outside Bahrain, provided the renewal process is completed before the permits' expiration date.
This significant step is part of an effort to expedite processes and meet the demands of business owners and investors for expatriate workers.
Employers can also renew work permits through the Expatriate Management System, selecting the desired duration and completing the payment process.
Alternatively, they can visit one of the banks authorised by LMRA to complete the renewal process and pay the associated fees.
