Speed humps in Bahrain are causing concerns among drivers and pedestrians due to a lack of proper white markings on them, it has been learned. This oversight is causing potential hazards such as abrupt braking, panic, and safety risks for all on the road.

The Daily Tribune reports that the absence of visible markings forces vehicles to abruptly brake, causing panic and safety risks for both drivers and those following.

When executed correctly, speed humps can enhance road safety, particularly in residential areas, school zones, and high-pedestrian traffic areas.

However, the lack of white markings on these humps presents a significant challenge to motorists, as they are now compelled to reduce speed and navigate roads more cautiously.

Solutions to address this issue are being explored to improve road safety.

‘Take swift action’

Driver Saleh told the Daily Tribune that it is imperative for authorities to take swift action.

"Firstly, conducting comprehensive inspections of the existing speed humps throughout Bahrain is of utmost importance, ensuring that all required white markings are in good condition.

Regular maintenance checks should be carried out to promptly identify and rectify any faded or missing markings," he pointed out.

Additionally, he said that public awareness campaigns play a vital role in educating drivers about the presence of unmarked speed humps.

According to him, increased signage, electronic message boards, and public service announcements can contribute to raising awareness about the potential dangers associated with unmarked humps.

He believes that by educating the public on the significance of adhering to speed limits and recognising unmarked traffic calming measures, we can collaboratively strive towards creating a safer road environment.

‘Expensive repairs’

Biju Vettakulathu, a supervisor at a car service centre, said that unmarked speed bumps can cause potential damage to a car when sudden brakes are applied.

He explained that abruptly engaging the brakes after driving at high speeds places strain on the suspension system and generates excessive heat, potentially damaging brake pads and hoses.

"Consistently resorting to sudden braking can eventually result in costly repairs for the customer. The expense of repairing any affected components varies depending on the car and the extent of the damage. Consequently, opting for gradual braking while driving is always advisable, whenever possible," he emphasised.
