Bahraini MP Dr. Maryam Al Dhaen has called on the government to crack down on food delivery drivers that violate traffic and health standards.

Through the proposal, the MP calls for the government’s attention to the abuses committed by motorcyclists who are engaged as delivery drivers and to put an end to the traffic violations committed by them.

Overtaking in the wrong manner is a common offence committed by such drivers, the statement addressed to the Speaker said.

The MP has also pointed out that health standards have to be set for the boxes carrying food items used by the delivery drivers.

Motorcycle riders are being exploited for the delivery of restaurant orders.

The MP stated that the riders use pedestrian corridors or pathways as shortcuts, thus putting the lives of pedestrians and other road users in danger.

Such violations not only put pedestrians and other road users at risk but also put delivery drivers in danger, the proposal said while highlighting the need for a regulation addressing the issue, for setting tighter control over such traffic offences, and for efforts to curb such offences.

Regarding the food boxes being used by delivery riders, the MP said there is no authority at present to inspect such boxes and to ensure that restaurants are following the minimum standards and requirements regarding cleanliness and hygiene.

Legislation addressing such an issue is needed, as unhygienic or bad food would cause infections among members of the community, the MP demanded while pointing out that one of the leading causes of food poisoning is food that is not clean or improperly prepared.

Lastly, the MP also cited in the proposal a recent viral social media post that included a video that allegedly showed a food delivery driver eating from a food parcel and then closing it.

Highlighting the issues of traffic violations, lack of hygiene standards for food boxes, and alleged abuse of food orders by delivery drivers, the MP has sought legislation to protect the health and safety of the public and to put an end to such practices.
