Failure to pay electricity bills has plunged a contractor into hot waters, with the court now demanding a staggering BD22,500 payment to the authority.

Besides, the defendant must pay the Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) a 2% interest rate against dues, cover the court expenses, and pay BD100 as attorney's fees.

This judgement stems from a legal action initiated by the EWA against the contractor, alleging non-payment of electricity consumption fees in violation of the previously agreed contract terms.

During the trial proceedings, the defendant was notably absent and failed to provide any defence or evidence to support their case.

The Court ruled in favour of the authority, citing supporting evidence such as the bills issued, records of meter readings, and estimations, all in accordance with Article 5 of Decree-Law No. 1 of 1996 governing electricity and water matters.

Furthermore, the judges examined the detailed statements of the outstanding bill totalling BD22,500 and confirmed that these invoices accurately reflected the actual consumption and adhered to established accounting principles.
