As scorching heat and relentless humidity continue to plague homes and offices, a growing number of air conditioning units are succumbing to the strain, failing to provide adequate cooling.

The adverse effects of extreme temperatures have become a common problem across the region, prompting experts to shed light on the issue and offer valuable insights to mitigate the problem.

Sumon Bazlur Rashid, a manager at Ultimate Air CO.W.L.L., has extensive experience dealing with the challenges posed by the Gulf’s hot climate. According to him, one of the primary reasons for AC failures is the inability to cool sufficiently due to the circulation of heat in the air.

To combat this issue, Rashid advises considering the type of compressor used in air conditioning units. There are two main types: rotary and piston compressors. After careful evaluation, he recommends investing in AC units equipped with piston compressors, as they have proven to be more reliable in high-temperature environments.

While a rotary compressor may cost around BD300 for a 1.5- to 3-tonne unit, the price difference with a piston compressor is minimal, with the latter priced at approximately BD340. In addition to selecting the right compressor type, Rashid emphasises the importance of regular AC servicing.

Whether used in homes, schools, or offices, AC units should ideally be serviced once or twice a year, depending on the frequency of usage. This maintenance practice is particularly crucial during hot weather, as the condenser coil tends to accumulate dust and debris, impeding its efficiency.

The dusty outdoor environment further exacerbates the problem, making regular servicing essential to prevent AC failures and ensure optimal cooling performance. The adverse effects of extreme heat on AC units are not limited to insufficient cooling.

Several other common issues can arise, including refrigerant leaks, faulty compressors, electrical problems, fan malfunctions, thermostat issues, dirty or blocked air filters, and overworked systems.

Addressing these problems promptly through professional maintenance and inspections can help prevent AC failures and extend the lifespan of AC units. As the Gulf region grapples with extreme heat and humidity, it is crucial to take proactive measures to ensure the efficient functioning of air conditioning systems.

By choosing AC units with piston compressors, which offer enhanced reliability, and prioritising regular servicing, individuals can enjoy cooler indoor environments and avoid the discomfort caused by failing AC units.
