As weekends approach, a significant number of Bahrain citizens and residents eagerly embark on a spiritual pilgrimage to perform Umrah.
Also known as ‘lesser pilgrimage’ or 'minor pilgrimage’, Umrah refers to a visit to the Holy Ka’aba (the Sacred Home of God) and can be performed by any Muslim at any time during the year.
Several experienced pilgrims shared their valuable insights on important considerations for fellow or new travellers.
These pilgrims’ aim is to shed light on the crucial factors that people should bear in mind to ensure a safe and fulfilling Umrah experience.
For those opting to travel by car, it is essential to be well prepared. Our experienced pilgrims unanimously advise filling up the gasoline tank at every available opportunity.
According to Syed Sara Fahim, “Petrol stations are spaced out, around 35 to 40 kilometres apart. This helps ensure a smooth journey without the worry of running out of fuel.
It’s also a good idea to carry essential supplies like tissues and soap. The petrol stations along the route usually have mosques, washrooms, and cold stores where travellers can replenish themselves spiritually and physically.”
However, she noted, “It’s important to be aware that the washroom facilities may not always meet cleanliness expectations due to the continuous influx of pilgrims from different countries. Despite daily cleaning efforts by the government, maintaining pristine conditions can be challenging.”
Regarding the highways from Riyadh to Makkah, there are specific challenges, especially related to road safety.
One concern raised by experienced travellers is the frequent disregard of traffic rules by truck drivers.
Faraz Ahmed shared, “Trucks often overtake cars, even though it’s against the law.
This increases the risk of accidents. So, drivers should be extremely cautious when using the middle lane and stay alert for truck activity.”
Shahla Perween emphasised the importance of managing fatigue during the approximately 15-hour journey from Bahrain to Makkah, including rest and meal breaks.
She said, “Ensuring the well-being of drivers is crucial to preventing drowsiness and the potential dangers it poses on the road.
Taking regular breaks and short naps can significantly reduce the risks associated with driving while tired, making the travel experience safer for everyone.”
“With the introduction of the “Nusuk” app for Umrah pilgrims, which includes an appointment system, time management has become more prominent.
While adherence to appointment timings may vary, many individuals strive to reach their destination on time.
"However, it is essential to emphasise that reckless driving should never be prioritized over reaching appointments punctually.
Responsible and cautious behaviour on the road is paramount to ensuring the safety of all travellers,” she added.
Saudi authorities have recently introduced robots to help pilgrims and visitors, which includes the dispensing of ‘Zamzam’ water bottles and assisting with cleaning up various areas.
The devices are also able to help Umrah pilgrims perform their rituals with information in several languages.
In conclusion, embarking on the sacred journey of Umrah is a significant experience for Bahrain citizens and residents.
By considering these vital factors, individuals can enhance their safety and overall experience.
