Crackdown on jewellery shops for selling cultivated pearls
Five jewellers were referred to Public Prosecution recently for selling cultivated pearls, it was announced yesterday. According to Industry, Commerce and Tourism Ministry, selling this type of pearls in Bahrain is illegal.
“It’s contrary to the articles of Decree Law No. (10) of the year 1990 in regards to monitoring pearls and precious stones,” the ministry clarified.
The detection of the violating shops came as a result of inspection campaigns undertaken by Precious Metals and Gem Testing Directorate at the Ministry to all jewellery stores in the country.
The ministry affirmed that the directorate conducted awareness campaigns in 2014 that included most jewellery shops. The ministry said in a statement issued yesterday: “Booklets containing the laws and requirement as well as penalties were distributed among the shops. The visits were made to 664 stores and 56 violations were observed, resulting in giving the violating stores warnings and deadlines to correct their irregularities.”
“During this year, the directorate conducted 23 inspection campaigns that included 352 jewellery shops and detected 32 shops selling small seized pearls. Accordingly, the directorate took samples to re-examine and confirm the quality of particleboard Pearl. Additionally, inspection campaigns to accessories stores resulted in the detection of 18 stores selling accessories that contain cultivated pearls. The directorate ordered to remove these products,” the directorate added.
