Bahrain is considered one of the active countries in the United Nations General Assembly in efforts to achieve gender equality, MP Dr. Maryam AlDhaen said at an Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) conference yesterday.

Addressing the IPU conference on the topic ‘Achieving gender equality in the United Nations General Assembly’, the MP stated that Bahrain works to support the principles and goals that promote women’s rights and enhance their participation in all fields.

She was attending the conference as part of the work of the Standing Committee on United Nations Affairs being held in connection with the 147th assembly of the IPU in Angola. Dr. Al-Dhaen further said Bahrain’s efforts to achieve gender equality include the adoption of the recommendations and guiding decisions of the United Nations General Assembly, promoting women’s rights, and working to ensure gender equality.

The MP said, “The Kingdom of Bahrain is keen to participate in international forums and conferences, especially those that discuss issues of gender equality and ways to enhance women’s rights. It also actively participates in international committees and councils related to gender equality issues, such as the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and the Commission on Sustainable Development.”

Support

Financial and technical support is provided by Bahrain for projects and programmes promoting the principle of equal opportunities and gender equality at the national, regional, and international levels, the MP explained.

The Kingdom is also keen to enhance cooperation with international organisations concerned with gender equality issues, such as UN Women. Further, the MP said the Kingdom realises that artificial intelligence and technology can be powerful tools to promote gender equality and achieve sustainable development goals.
