Bahrain recently experienced heavy rainfall, causing widespread flooding in various parts of the Kingdom. While the Ministry of Works swiftly mobilised its rain emergency team to drain the water, concerned citizens are now urging authorities to develop a comprehensive long-term plan to address recurring rain-related issues.

Last week’s heavy rains left many areas impassable, with water levels rising to the extent that both vehicles and pedestrians struggled to navigate through the flooded streets. In response, the Ministry of Works promptly initiated operations, deploying the rain emergency team to remove the excess water and conduct assessments of affected sites.

However, social media platforms, particularly Instagram, became a sounding board for citizens to express their concerns and frustrations about the recurring nature of the problem.

Temporary solutions

In an Instagram post, Abu Haider questioned the reliance on temporary solutions, stating, “This happens every year. There’s no need to merely drain the water step by step. Instead, let’s focus on addressing the root causes, such as improving the infrastructure. If a house leaks, it’s impossible to solve the problem without tackling it from its core.”

Echoing similar sentiments, Abdul Alshaiji highlighted the need for a permanent solution, specifically emphasising the implementation of a robust drainage system. Ali Alaswad drew attention to a particular location affected by the heavy downpour. He urged the Ministry to visit the 470 Complex in Karana village, where swamps and mud had accumulated due to the lack of proper street paving.

As Bahrain continues to experience heavy rainfall, it is imperative for relevant authorities to heed the voices of their citizens and formulate a long-term strategy to mitigate the impact of such events. By doing so, the nation can better prepare itself for future rain-related challenges and provide its residents with a more resilient and sustainable environment.
