16 get 15 yrs’ jail for bombing, rioting

Sixteen defendants, who set the security booth of the Sitra Post Office on fire, have been slapped with 15 years’ jail each by the High Criminal Court.

Three other persons involved in the case received 10 years’ prison each.

A security officer who was in the booth at the time of the attack had suffered burns.

The defendants were said to have been among the group of rioters who carried out the assault using petrol bombs. The saboteurs also reportedly pelted Molotov cocktails at the police officers who reached the scene to defend the office.

The injured victim was admitted to hospital, but he fully recovered, according to court files.

Although all the thugs had fled the scene, detectives managed to identify the 19 suspects. And one of them later led the police to a cache, where rioting tools, and improvised shotguns as well as two masks were stashed in.

The defendants were charged with premeditated attempted murder, putting lives and properties in danger, possessing inflammables and rioting.
