Bahrain protects women’s rights against violence: MP Al-Dhaen

In acknowledgment of the pivotal role and tireless efforts of the Supreme Council for Women, Member of Parliament Dr. Maryam Al-Dhaen affirmed the Kingdom of Bahrain’s commitment to safeguarding women from all forms of violence.

Dr. Al-Dhaen emphasized that Bahrain has established a robust legislative foundation dedicated to the protection of women’s rights, with ongoing efforts to update and review laws to ensure their efficacy.

The legislative authority, as asserted by Dr. Al-Dhaen, actively supports initiatives that strengthen women’s rights and serve as protective measures against various forms of violence and discrimination.

On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, she highlighted Bahrain’s advanced position within the international community in combating violence against women, emphasizing the nation’s significant contributions to global efforts in this regard.

Dr. Al-Dhaen also emphasized the importance of the day in spotlighting endeavours that contribute to achieving gender equality.

Addressing violence against women as a national responsibility, Dr. Al-Dhaen lauded the accomplishment of abolishing Article (353) of the Penal Code, which previously allowed the exemption of a rapist from punishment if he married the victim.

This legislative amendment is recognized as a significant stride towards protecting women and preserving their rights. Dr. Al-Dhaen extended her sincere praise to the Supreme Council for Women, led by Her Royal Highness Princess Sabika bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, for the unwavering commitment to ensuring and promoting the rights of Bahraini women.

She acknowledged the Council’s instrumental role in combating violence, including domestic violence, through awareness-raising initiatives and other significant endeavours. Furthermore, Dr. Al-Dhaen commended the Women’s Support Centre and various governmental bodies such as the Ministries of Interior, Health, etc.
