Social workers helped an Indian expatriate who had been living on Bahrain's streets for seven months return home. Radhakrishnan Vetrivel, a 40-year-old from Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu, came to the kingdom on a visit visa in June 2022, in the hopes of securing employment. He has been living in Manama's public parks since his visa expired this June, and it has been a miserable life since then. His passport and other paperwork, along with his backpack, disappeared during this time of extreme poverty.
Social worker Amaldev O. K. became aware of this unfortunate situation and took action, obtaining Mr. Vetrivel an outpass from the Indian Embassy. The Bahraini immigration officials waived a BD 825 fine at the embassy's request. Mr. Vetrivel was able to return home on December 20 thanks to this.
Mr. Amaldev conveyed his appreciation to the Bahraini officials, Indian Ambassador Vinod K. Jacob, embassy staffer Suran Lal, and Annai Tamil Mantram member Senthil for sponsoring the plane ticket.
These incidents highlight the desperation and determination of individuals who are willing to take risks and challenge the system for a chance at a brighter future. Understandably, people are driven to extreme measures when they believe their own countries cannot provide the opportunities they seek. However, it is crucial to address the root causes of this behaviour and work towards creating a more equitable global society where everyone has access to equal opportunities regardless of their nationality
