A Bahraini calligrapher has taken to social media to express her unwavering support for Palestine through her creative artwork. Miss Ness, a full-time calligrapher who turned to the craft as a hobby after struggling to find employment, has gained attention for her unique pieces advocating for the Palestinian cause.
In an exclusive interview with The Daily Tribune, Miss Ness shared her inspiring journey into the world of calligraphy. She explained that she turned to the craft as a hobby after struggling to find employment, and it quickly became a passion.
“I vividly remember stumbling upon a quote that captivated my attention with its elegant script,” she said. “From that moment on, I applied the principle of ‘Start Where You Are. Use What You Have. Do What You Can.’” When asked about her motivation to create designs in support of Palestine, Miss Ness spoke passionately about witnessing numerous restaurants and cafes donating their earnings to aid Palestine.
This inspired her to think about what she could do to contribute. “Since I was already creating art, I decided to dedicate a collection specifically to the Palestinian cause and donate all the proceeds from my ‘Palestine Collection 23’ to support them,” she explained.
Driven by a clear vision, Miss Ness managed to complete her ‘Palestine Collection 23’ in just one week. She generously shared advice for aspiring calligraphers, suggesting that beginners start with a hard brush pen and either transparent or tracing paper.
Path
However, she emphasised that even a simple pencil and paper would suffice. “That’s how I started too,” she recalled. “At the time, I had no mentor to guide me. But through research, asking questions, and engaging with experienced calligraphers, I found my path.” Regarding her preferred calligraphy style, Miss Ness expressed a fondness for free-style Arabic, stating, “Above all, I aim to create art that resonates with the heart more than the eye.”
Through her remarkable artwork, Miss Ness stands as a shining example of Bahrainis who have rallied behind Palestine, underscoring the power of art to convey solidarity and support for those in need.
