Waste management topped the agenda at Muharraq Municipality’s recent weekly meeting, highlighting a growing concern across the Kingdom of Bahrain.
Recognizing the limitations of existing landfills and the environmental impact of improper disposal, the council members, led by Chairman Abdulaziz Ahmed Alnaar, Vice President Saleh Jasim Buhaza, and Director General Khalid Alqallaf, delved into a plan of action.
Cracking down on illegal dumping, the council proposed stricter regulations and strict enforcement of hefty fines (up to BD300) for those caught tossing construction or agricultural waste in public spaces or on residential streets.
To ensure compliance, they debated a 48-hour grace period for residents to dispose of waste properly before facing penalties.
This measure aims to strike a balance between accountability and providing ample time for responsible waste management.
Alternative solutions
With landfill capacity nearing its limits, as confirmed by a 2023 study and echoed in previous warnings by EcoMena, the council proactively explored alternative solutions.
Approving negotiations for designated agricultural waste disposal areas marks a significant step towards mitigating landfill strain and safeguarding environmental health.
This move prioritizes both sustainability and public well-being in the face of the rising waste tide.
Beyond waste, the council addressed other community concerns.
The disappointing absence of Ministry of Health representatives during the discussions on mosquito infestation highlighted the need for collaborative efforts in tackling broader environmental issues.
By strengthening inter-departmental communication and prioritizing coordinated solutions, Muharraq can effectively address critical public health concerns impacting its residents.
Infrastructure development
In addition to environmental matters, the council approved proposals for infrastructure development, including a pedestrian bridge connecting Qalali Housing and Qalali Coast, a walkway in the same area, and the expansion of a water canal in Hidd.
These initiatives demonstrate the council’s commitment to enhancing quality of life and fostering a vibrant infrastructure within the region.
Muharraq Municipality’s proactive approach to waste management, combined with its focus on infrastructure development and public health concerns, sets a positive precedent for environmental stewardship and community well-being.
