In a policy update yesterday evening, Assistant Secretary of State Barbara Leaf outlined the US’ strategies for navigating the complexities of the Middle East, emphasizing a multi-pronged approach focused on resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and fostering regional stability.

Enduring commitment to peace

Leaf, who is in charge of Near Eastern Affairs, highlighted her personal connection to the region and stressed the US commitment to securing a durable solution to the ongoing Israeli-Hamas conflict.

This solution, she outlined, goes beyond immediate de-escalation and aims to establish a pathway towards a Palestinian state, addressing the root causes of insecurity for both sides. She was talking at the policy update organized by the Dubai Regional Media Hub of US State Department.

Immediate priorities

Addressing the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, securing hostage releases, preventing a repeat of the October 7th attacks, and containing the conflict’s expansion, were identified as immediate priorities.

Confronting regional challenges

Leaf fielded questions regarding various regional flashpoints. On the Houthi attacks in the Red Sea, she highlighted the economic repercussions and growing international efforts to address the issue. Regarding Iran-backed militias in Iraq, she acknowledged the Iraqi government’s challenges and encouraged stronger action to uphold sovereignty.

The volatile Israel-Hezbollah situation was addressed by emphasizing diplomatic efforts for de-escalation. When questioned about the timing of a ceasefire and Palestinian statehood, Leaf reiterated the urgency of a hostage release deal as a stepping stone. She expressed optimism for a diplomatic resolution and reaffirmed the US commitment to supporting a Palestinian state.

No change in arms deliveries

Responding to concerns about potential changes in US arms deliveries to Israel, Leaf unequivocally stated that no such reduction is being considered.

Seeking opportunities amidst volatility

Acknowledging the volatile regional climate, especially on the Israel-Lebanon border, Leaf concluded by reiterating the US commitment to seizing opportunities for diplomatic solutions and forging a pathway towards peace and stability in the Middle East.
