Bahrain keen to export birds to boost regional economy

The Kingdom of Bahrain seems to be experiencing a feathered frenzy, with bird breeding blossoming into a popular hobby and a potential economic driver.

According to the Bahrain Bird Society (BBS), bird breeding across the Kingdom has soared by 25% since 2020, fueled by a passion for avian companions and a drive to raise Bahrain's profile in the international pet industry.

Thanks to collaborative efforts by BBS and authorities, Bahrain has successfully protected five bird species previously facing extinction in the region, including the Moluccan cockatoo, Scarlet Macaw, Amazon yellow naped, Amazon double yellow head, and African grey parrot. These “feather friends” hold special value for the Kingdom, serving not only as beloved companions but also as potential ambassadors on the global stage.

These feathered friends hold a special place in Bahrain for two key reasons: Bahrain aims to raise its profile at prestigious international events like the Mondial Ornithological Championship. High-quality birds bred here could compete and showcase the Kingdom’s expertise, putting its name on the global map.

Beyond international recognition, Bahrain is eyeing significant potential to export these birds, boosting the regional economy. With their passion and dedication, 340+ Bahrainis actively involved in breeding, along with welcoming participation from expats, are building a strong foundation for this endeavour.

Bahraini birds have garnered international acclaim, receiving high-quality certification from judges and even recommendations for entry into international competitions. BBS, aiming to make Bahrain a global player, is seeking government support to raise awareness and boost bird breeding activities.

Showcasing Success The recent bird show held at PetZone in Seef attracted visitors from across the GCC, featuring 35 species and 60 birds. Eng. Yousif Alasfoor, President of BBS, shared that members are already exporting birds, generating revenue for the country. A unique identification ring system ensures authenticity, and BBS seeks opportunities for further collaboration with international organizations.

Seeking Government Wings

The Bahraini government plays a crucial role, providing invaluable support. BBS is now seeking special approval to register in the prestigious Mondial Ornithological Championship, waving the Bahraini flag in the global arena.

“This permission would allow us to represent Bahrain proudly at the top of the world,” Yousif told The Daily Tribune. Sami Al Mujaini, Country Manager of PetZone, acknowledges the growing hunger for pets and Bahrain’s potential to compete globally.

“We deeply appreciate the support from the government and authorities,” he says, highlighting their flexibility and encouragement.

As bird breeding takes flight in Bahrain, stakeholders anticipate both economic opportunities and increased global recognition. With continued collaboration and support, the Kingdom’s feathered friends are poised to soar to new heights.
