BKS to hold awareness camp on cancer, heart diseases on Nov 28

Bahrain The Ladies Wing of the Bahrain Keraleeya Samajam, in association with Cancer Care Group (CCG), affiliated to Bahrain Cancer Society, is conducting a medical awareness programme on Cancer & Heart Diseases on November 28 at Bahrain Keraleeya Samajam Diamond Jubilee Hall, Varghese Karakkal, BKS president and V. K Pavithran, General Secretary, said in a press note.

Medical Oncologist Dr Prem Ravi Varma and Clinical Oncologist Dr Nisha Pillai, both from the Oncology Department of Salmaniya Medical Complex, will speak on cancers of men and ladies respectively – common causes, risk factors and their prevention, diagnosis and management in general, with the help of audio-visual aids and dummies.

Attendees will have an  opportunity to interact and clarify their doubts at the end of each session.

Dr P. V. Cheriyan, president of CCG and Chief Medical Officer of Accident & Emergency Department, Salmaniya Medical Complex, will talk on the topic – “ Take It To Heart “- prevention and treatment of Heart Disease, which is one of the most common causes of death in the world.

He will talk about cardiac risk factors and how to modify them to prevent a heart attack. Related topics - Lipid levels (Cholesterol and Triglycerides), Diet, Alcohol, Exercise, high Blood Pressure and tobacco will be discussed.

The main objective will be the prevention and reversal if an attack occurs and how to lead a healthy life-style. Timing as follows: 6.30pm – 7.30pm – checking of vital signs and blood sugar levels, ECG for needy (advised by doctors) 7.30- 9.30pm – medical seminar- Cancer & Heart Disease 9.30-10pm – interactive session.

This programme is part of the ongoing health education and awareness programmes undertaken by the

BKS and CCG. Common lifestyle diseases like Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension etc. will be discussed in near future. It is also planned to have training sessions on topics like Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and management of choking in the near future.
