His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, conveyed heartfelt congratulations to His Highness Shaikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Amir of Qatar, in light of the Qatar National Football Team's triumph in securing the 2023 AFC Asian Cup.

Expressing admiration for the remarkable performance of the Qatari squad throughout the tournament, His Majesty commended their efforts, which led to Qatar clinching their second Asian title in history.

King Hamad also commended Qatar's exceptional organisation of the prestigious Asian football event, underscoring its role in ensuring the tournament's resounding success.

Highlighting the strong fraternal relations between Bahrain and Qatar, His Majesty extended warm wishes to Shaikh Tamim for continued health and happiness, while also expressing hopes for ongoing progress and prosperity for the Qatari people.

Qatar came into the final attempting to become the fifth team to lift back-to-back Asian titles.

The competition, originally scheduled to take place in China last year but postponed and moved because of Covid, will be remembered for shocks -- even if the final failed to produce one last one.

Pre-tournament favourites Japan were dumped out in the quarter-finals by Iran, who subsequently lost to Qatar in a fivegoal thriller.

Jordan reached the semi-finals for the first time and blew away South Korea, leaving coach Jurgen Klinsmann clinging precariously onto his job.

Tajikistan made the quarter-finals on their Asian Cup debut, while Palestine also made a piece of history by reaching the knockout rounds for the first time.
