The Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA) organised a side exhibition titled “Half a Century of Arts” at the Mathaf Bahrain National Museum as part of the 50th anniversary celebration of the Bahrain Annual Fine Arts Exhibition.

This special exhibition offers a retrospective journey through five decades of artistic evolution in the Kingdom, showcasing pivotal artworks from the early 1970s to the present day. A visual chronicle of Bahrain’s artistry, the exhibition pays homage to pioneering artists, experimentalists, academics, and modernists who have shaped the cultural landscape.

It features select pieces that have left a lasting impact on the local art scene, along with displays highlighting the history of the annual art exhibition, including awards and brochures since its inception in 1972.

Kicking off with Yacoub Yousef Qasim’s poignant piece “Death of an Artist,” the exhibition traces the trajectory of Bahraini artistry through the years. However, the exhibition’s temporary nature raises concerns about the lack of a permanent museum dedicated to preserving and showcasing these invaluable artworks to the public.

While plans for the “Museum of Modern Art” have been announced, progress on its establishment remains uncertain. The exhibition underscores the urgency of creating a dedicated space to house Bahrain’s extensive art collection, which includes over 5,000 pieces spanning paintings, sculptures, installations, and media works.

As the collection continues to grow, efforts to secure a fitting exhibition space are paramount to ensure these artistic treasures are accessible to all, fostering cultural enrichment and appreciation for Bahraini plastic artistry across generations.
