A recent shipment of approximately 2,000 Somali sheep arrived in Bahrain from the Sultanate of Oman, marking a crucial step in preparation for the upcoming holy month of Ramadan.

Mekki Hassan, Director of Operations at the Bahrain Livestock Company, a subsidiary of the Travco Group, confirmed the successful delivery after a journey spanning several days. The company had proactively contracted with an exporter in Oman since the beginning of February to secure the quantity of Somali sheep.

These shipments typically originate from Somalia, traverse the Arabian Sea, and pass through the Omani port of Salalah before reaching their final destinations in Muscat or markets across the UAE and other Arab Gulf countries.

Due to challenges posed by prevailing conditions in the Bab al-Mandab region and recent weather fluctuations, delays were experienced in transporting the sheep to market. However, the timely arrival of this shipment, just days before Ramadan, ensures ample availability for consumers during the blessed month.

Upon arrival, the sheep were transported to the company’s barns in the Sitra area, where they will undergo standard veterinary inspections and receive clearance from the Agriculture and Veterinary Department of the Ministry of Municipalities before being offered for sale.

The Bahrain Livestock Company assures consumers that the sheep will be sold at reasonable prices, with the company’s main slaughterhouse in Sitra fully equipped to handle slaughtering, cutting, and packaging according to official standards.

Additionally, the company emphasises the availability of various types of meat throughout Ramadan, including locally slaughtered, chilled Pakistani beef imported by plane, and frozen imports by sea.
