iGA Bahrain participates in 55th Session of United Nations Statistical Commission

The Kingdom of Bahrain, represented by the Information & eGovernment Authority (iGA), participated in the 55th sessions of the United Nations Statistical Commission, which was held in New York, USA.

The iGA participated in the main sessions and workshops, in-which number of regional and global statistical topics been discussed. The meetings also discussed the principles of official statistics, data and indicators related to the Sustainable Development Goals 2030, as well as discussing statistics on open data, ICT, business registry, governance, national accounts, and data science and more.

iGA Deputy Chief Executive for Statistics and Population Registry, Ms. Duaa Sultan Mohamed highlighted that participating in this global statistical event is in-line with Authority’s direction towards achieving the government’s aspirations, and to contribute in the implementation of National plans and programs in the field of statistics.

She added that these meetings will enhance statistical cooperation between the Kingdom and international organizations and countries with long experience in the field of conducting surveys and studies.

Ms. AlHarban stressed on the importance of the Statistical Committee meetings in providing opportunities to review the statistical activities and experiences of countries, indicating the impact of this in supporting data generation regionally and globally, as well as facilitating the knowledge sharing and capacity building to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

Current and future challenges

iGA Deputy CE for Statistics and Population Registry also pointed out that the meetings enable experts and specialists around the world to discuss current and future challenges that may face the use of statistical data, emphasizing the role of this in identifying and enhancing countries’ access to best practices at the statistical field.

She added that the joint meetings will promote the regional cooperation in various areas, including setting regional statistical system priorities, building relationships with different sectors, and facilitating knowledge exchange to achieve the outcome and results.

It is worth mentioning that the United Nations Statistical Commission whose membership includes 24 member states of the United Nations, get selected by the United Nations Economic and Social Council, including the Republic of Tunisia, whose membership concludes in December 2025.

Established in 1947, the Statistical Commission is the highest body of the global statistical system that brings together senior statisticians from Member States from around the world, responsible for decision-making for international statistical activities, setting statistical standards and developing concepts and methods, including their implementation at the national and international levels.
