A GCC national has been ordered by the court to repay BD28,000 to a flight attendant, a sum he had borrowed from her under false pretenses nine years ago. The repayment was ordered after it was revealed that the defendant had deceived her by fabricating a story about his father’s illness.
The flight attendant had fallen victim to an elaborate love story spun by the defendant, in which he portrayed himself as a successful businessman with a wealthy family background.
He claimed that his father, purportedly his business partner, was battling advanced-stage cancer and urgently needed funds for medical treatment. Initially captivated by his charm and apparent sincerity, the flight attendant agreed to lend him a total of BD35,000 to support his father’s supposed medical expenses and business needs.
Some of the amount was transferred to his bank account in his home country, while the rest was handed over to him in cash. However, after receiving the funds, the defendant vanished from her life, leaving her to seek legal recourse to recover her money.
The flight attendant, a resident of Bahrain and working in the aviation industry since 2013, filed a lawsuit against the defendant, detailing the events leading to her financial loss. She presented evidence, including telephone conversations and witness testimonies, to support her claims.
Despite objections from the defendant’s lawyer, the court ruled in favor of the flight attendant, citing insufficient evidence of repayment by the defendant. Consequently, the court ordered the defendant to repay the plaintiff BD27,936, representing the amount owed, along with associated fees and legal expenses.
