Bahrain eco-warriors honoured in UN-Habitat’s ‘Green Your Community’ competition

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) partnered with Al-Riwaq’s “The Nest” and the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture to launch the “Green Your Community” competition.
This initiative aimed to spark creative, affordable, and sustainable solutions for integrating nature and green spaces into Bahrain’s urban areas. The competition garnered close to 100 submissions from a wide range of individuals, including university students, designers, artists, and sustainability enthusiasts.
Participants were tasked with reimagining Bahrain’s streets and communities, transforming them into hubs of innovation, sustainability, and greenery. Designs encompassed diverse urban and residential areas, including housing projects, mixed-use buildings, and sections of streets.
A distinguished jury panel, comprised of representatives from the private sector, academia, and government, evaluated the submissions based on Innovation, Creativity, Sustainability, Feasibility, Cultural Context and Community Wellbeing.
After an evaluation process, the “Green Your Community” competition proudly recognized the exceptional efforts of several individuals.
Winners
Hawra Husain Abdulla secured the first place, while Fatema Husain Ali AlHaider and Ward Abdulaziz AlShowaikh were awarded the prestigious second and third place positions, respectively.
Layla Abbas Mohamed and Fathima Haadiya Raud were acknowledged for their exceptional submissions. These winners impressed the jury with their innovative and sustainable designs that effectively addressed the challenge of integrating nature into Bahrain’s urban environment.
Their contributions set a strong precedent for future endeavors aimed at fostering a greener and more sustainable future for the nation’s communities. This competition serves as a testament to the collective effort towards fostering a greener future for Bahrain.
By harnessing the creativity and expertise of diverse participants, UN-Habitat and its partners aim to translate innovative ideas into tangible solutions, ultimately enriching the lives of Bahrain through a more sustainable and nature-integrated urban environment.
