Bahraini theatre wins hearts and awards in prestigious international festivals

Bahraini theatre has recently garnered significant international recognition, highlighting the Kingdom’s vibrant theatrical scene and the talent of its artists on the global stage.

Notably, “Wujoud,” a production by Gilgamesh Theatre, secured the second prize at the Petersburg International Monodrama Festival, while the Bahraini play “Shark” amassed multiple awards at the International Theatre Festival for Youth of the South.

“Wujoud” received acclaim for its portrayal of Bahraini culture and talent, with lead actress Reem Wannous honoured with a diploma for her exceptional performance at the Baltic House Theatre in Russia.

The play, directed by Jamal Al-Ghaylan and featuring music by Salem Al-Jarh, captivated audiences with its exploration of motherhood’s trials and tribulations, penned by author Dr. Kazem Mu’nis.

Meanwhile, “Shark,” directed by Muhammad Al-Hujairi, made waves at the International Theatre Festival for Youth of the South in Africa, clinching four awards, including Best Second Show and Best Director. Elham Alawi, the show’s lead actress, was also recognised for her outstanding performance.

Director Al-Hujairi expressed pride in representing Bahrain creatively on the global stage and emphasised the importance of supporting and honouring creative talents as cultural ambassadors.

The success of “Shark” has propelled its journey to three upcoming international festivals, affirming Bahrain’s prowess in the arts and its commitment to showcasing its cultural heritage worldwide.

With over 360 shows in contention, “Shark” stood out among its peers, underscoring the Kingdom’s dedication to excellence in theatre and the arts.
