Bahrain highlights cultural heritage preservation efforts

Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA) chairman His Excellency Shaikh Khalifa bin Ahmed bin Abdullah Al Khalifa underscored Bahrain’s commitment to cultural heritage preservation, particularly on World Monuments and Sites Day, observed yesterday. He emphasised the Kingdom’s role in regional cooperation, hosting the Arab Regional Centre for World Heritage in Manama, and supporting Arab countries in safeguarding their cultural heritage.

Shaikh Khalifa bin Ahmed bin Abdullah was speaking as the Kingdom joined the commemoration of the International Day of Monuments and Sites, emphasising the significance of tangible cultural heritage in sustainable development and societal progress globally.

Collective action

The event serves as a call for collective action to address challenges facing heritage preservation and achieve further advancements for future generations. Shaikh Khalifa bin Ahmed bin Abdullah praised the Venice Charter’s role in fostering international collaboration for heritage preservation, highlighting its relevance in developing innovative solutions amidst evolving challenges and opportunities.

Commitment

He affirmed BACA’s commitment to archaeological restoration and preservation, particularly at UNESCO-listed sites and other historical landmarks across Bahrain. The Venice Charter, issued in 1964, remains a pivotal framework for monument restoration and maintenance, celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. It addresses contemporary challenges such as climate change, guiding efforts to safeguard cultural heritage for future generations. Shaikh Khalifa underscored Bahrain’s rich historical legacy, spanning from the Dilmun civilization to the modern era, and reiterated BACA’s dedication to preserving this heritage for posterity.
