Tragic Sitra Accident Sparks Safety Concerns Among Youth Drivers
A devastating accident near Sitra on Shaikh Jaber Al Sabah Highway has once again thrust the issue of road safety, particularly among young drivers, into the spotlight. The incident, which occurred on Friday night, resulted in the loss of three young Bahraini lives, with two victims being under the age of 20. The community is left in mourning, with calls for urgent action to address the escalating trend of fatal traffic accidents involving youth.
Sadly, this recent tragedy was not an isolated incident. In January, another horrific accident claimed the lives of three young men in a violent crash that occurred after 2:00 AM. The vehicle, carrying five young occupants, veered off course and collided with a building wall while travelling from Isa Town to Jidhafs.
Such incidents are not confined to January alone. Earlier this month, a Bahraini woman, aged 26, lost her life in a motorcycle accident, while another young man fell victim to a separate motorcycle accident. The frequency of these accidents has raised alarm bells, prompting calls for urgent measures to enhance road safety.
In response to the surge in fatal and non-fatal accidents, the Tender Board initiated a tender in March to procure 500 intelligent cameras for the General Directorate of Traffic at the Ministry of Interior. The objective is to establish a comprehensive monitoring system for traffic flow, aid in redirecting vehicles, assist stalled vehicles, deploy patrols and tow trucks, and identify violations on public roads.
Amidst growing concerns, Member of Parliament Jameel Mullah Hassan has underscored the necessity of intensifying awareness campaigns targeted at young people and drivers through various media platforms and official channels. Describing the recent spate of fatal accidents as "heartbreaking," Mullah Hassan has emphasized the urgency of implementing stricter penalties and regulations for traffic violations. This includes advocating for increased fines for offences such as speeding, disregarding traffic signals, and driving in the opposite direction.
He added, "Such behaviours demonstrate a blatant disregard for one's own life and the lives of others on the road." As the nation grapples with the aftermath of yet another tragic loss, there is a pressing need for concerted efforts to promote responsible driving habits and ensure the safety of all road users, especially the youth.
