The Council of Representatives yesterday unanimously endorsed a proposal to revise the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) voting system predicated on capital.
This amendment, congruent with Decree Law No. 48 of 2021, endeavours to guarantee equitable representation for all merchants within the Chamber.
The proposal garnered significant support, with 28 votes in favor. MP Abdulla Alromaihi abstained from voting, while MP Hasan Ebrahim cast the sole dissenting vote.
The draft legislation addresses the pressing necessity for a more inclusive and balanced system that equalises the playing field within the Chamber.
Presently, the extant system disproportionately benefits major merchants, engendering an inequity.
The suggested amendment aspires to redress this disparity and afford impartial representation for all merchants engaged. MP Basma Mubarak said: “In the last chamber elections, only 1,500 members participated, and there is a reluctance to engage due to the current law, which fails to provide justice to small and medium enterprises.”
