Bahrain sizzles: Sixth hottest April since 1902

Bahrain experienced a significantly hotter and rainier April than usual, according to a report from the Ministry of Transportation and Communications’ Meteorology Department.

The report states that the average monthly temperature reached 27.1°C, which is 1.1°C higher than the usual April average.

This is the sixth highest average temperature for April since 1902, with the highest average monthly temperature for April being 27.7°C recorded in 2021.

As per the report, the average monthly maximum temperature recorded in April was 31.5°C, an increase of 0.9°C compared to the average, making it the ninth highest average maximum temperature for April since 1946, with the highest average monthly maximum temperature for April being 33.3°C recorded in 2021.

The highest temperature recorded at Bahrain International Airport was 35.0°C on April 24th. It’s worth citing that the highest temperature ever recorded in April at Bahrain International Airport was 41.7°C on April 20, 1949.

Temperature

The highest temperature for April was 37.7°C recorded at the University of Bahrain on April 22.

At the Bahrain International Circuit, the highest temperature was 37.6°C, also recorded on the same day. On the other hand, the average monthly minimum temperature was 23.8°C, an increase of 1.4°C compared to the average.

This is the third highest average minimum temperature for April since 1946, with the highest average monthly minimum temperature for April being 24.1°C recorded in 2017 and 2010.

The lowest temperature for April was 18.0°C recorded on April 15th at Bahrain International Airport. However, 17.5°C was recorded on April 3rd in Durrat Al Bahrain.

The lowest temperature ever recorded for April at Bahrain International Airport was 13.9°C on April 1st, 1956.

Meanwhile, as per the report, April was rainy, with a total rainfall of 45.6 mm falling over three days of the month at Bahrain International Airport. This total is the fifth highest total rainfall for April since 1902, and is almost eight times the average rainfall for April, which is 5.8 mm.

Thunderstorms

The Kingdom was affected by thunderstorms for three days in April. Heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms fell on the Kingdom on April 15th, with a total rainfall of 23.1 mm on that day at Bahrain International Airport.

This total is the sixth highest daily rainfall total for April since 1948. The highest daily rainfall for April was 63.1 mm, recorded on April 7th, 1961 at Bahrain International Airport.

April also saw a small amount of rainfall, not exceeding 0.05 mm, on April 1st, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 13th, 2024 at Bahrain International Airport. April is a transitional month from winter to summer, and this period is usually accompanied by unstable weather conditions, known locally as “Al Sarayat”, which lasts until mid-May.
