UNIDO bats for green energy
The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) together with the University of Bahrain, the Arab International Centre for Entrepreneurship and Investment organised a specialised capacity-building programme on green industry and sustainable energy solutions through the support of the Supreme Council for Environment.
A certificate-awarding ceremony was organised by all parties in the premise of University of Bahrain in the Zain e-Learning Centre. The ceremony was attended by the President of the University of Bahrain, Dr. Ibrahim Janahi, and Dr. Hashim Hussein, Head of UNIDO ITPO Bahrain.
The eight-day regional training programme which focuses on green technology and financing as tools used for developing sustainable systems in the region is titled “Green industry: Towards inclusive
and sustainable development” gathered 30 participants from seventeen countries namely Bahrain, Tunisia, Morocco, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Sudan, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Cape Verde, Nigeria, Cameroon, Ghana, South Africa, Kenya, Senegal and Swaziland.
During the ceremony, the President of University of Bahrain Dr Ibrahim Janahi expressed that the green technology movement is something that carries real weight and participants from diverse countries in the UNIDO programme would benefit a lot and in turn influence the community on sustainable development.
“Our programmes are expanding aiming for sustainability for everyone to better behave on what we can consume and recycle. The programme was designed to provide participants with the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the latest trends in sustainable solutions and to further reflect on practical, innovative and cost effective ways to address sustainability problems within industries and all kinds of manufacturing units on his to use this kind of energy,” said Hashim Hussein, Head of UNIDO’s Investment and Technology Promotion Office in Bahrain.
“The participants will collectively work on concepts and strategies to improve industry’s environmental performance and to implement the concepts of green industry and sustainable energy solutions within the context of UNDIO’s mission to achieve inclusive and sustainable industrial development. The condensed international course is very intensive and the participants had a great productive time in University of Bahrain so far,” said Jacek Cukrowski, Chief of UNIDO’s Institute for Capacity Development
Speaking to one of the participants in the programme, Reem Irany from Lebanon expressed that, “The content of the programme is quite diversified and this is my second time with UNIDO, since my field is in engineering the programme brought a lot of eco design related subjects for the economy. Coming from a place where I am not exposed to may cultures, it is surprising for me to see that we have similar issues concerning energy and the environment.”
Another participant from Bahrain, Fatima Bu Rashid, an environmental specialist at the Supreme Council for Environment, explained that, “It’s been a very condensed course and so far I’ve learnt a lot about the different aspects of the industrial sector such as energy efficiency and economics, greener technologies, legislation and laws, empowering women in the industrial sector, social impacts, innovation and innovative design just to name a few.
My job requires me to understand how new and existing projects that impact the environment and world around them, and how to mitigate and minimise any damages that might arise.”
