The Kingdom of Bahrain stressed the urgent need for parties to the conflict to comply with international law, including international humanitarian law and international human rights law, in order to protect civilians in armed conflicts around the world, with the need to follow a comprehensive approach that takes into account the complexities and accumulations of the full scope of damage.

This came during the Kingdom of Bahrain’s speech delivered by the Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the United Nations in New York, Ambassador Jamal Fares Al-Ruwaie, in the Security Council’s open discussion session on civilians and armed conflict, which coincides with the 25th anniversary of the adoption of Security Council Resolution 1265 (1999) and the 75th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions for the year 1949.

The Permanent Representative pointed to the great success achieved by the thirty-third session of the Council of the League of Arab States at the summit level, which was hosted by the Kingdom of Bahrain on May 16 of this year, and the initiatives put forward by the Kingdom and adopted by the Bahrain Summit, as stated in the Bahrain Declaration issued by the summit, which includes calling for the establishment of an international peace conference in the Middle East to resolve the Palestinian issue, supporting the acceptance of membership of the State of Palestine in the United Nations, and providing health and educational services to those affected by conflicts and disputes in the region, with the aim of creating a safe and stable environment for all the peoples of the Middle East and beginning the recovery phase for the region.

He said that, given the nature of the developments in the Gaza Strip, the Bahrain summit issued a statement on the tragic situation in the Strip and the Israeli attack on the Rafah crossing, where the extension of the Israeli aggression to the Palestinian city of Rafah, which has become a refuge for more than a million displaced people, and the resulting catastrophic humanitarian consequences were also condemned, and the control of the Israeli occupation forces on the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing, which aims to tighten the siege on civilians, and led to the cessation of the operation of the crossing and the flow of humanitarian aid.

The Permanent Representative added that the statement called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, an end to all attempts at forced displacement, an end to all forms of the siege, allowing full and sustainable access to humanitarian aid to the Strip and the immediate withdrawal of Israel from Rafah, reiterating the importance of intensifying efforts aimed at protecting civilians and reducing the effects of armed conflict on their lives, including through the establishment of preventive measures, in order to ensure the safety, security and dignity of civilians during armed conflict, and to meet the aspirations of the peoples of the world for peace, stability and development
