The High Criminal Court has concluded the trial of a former Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) employee who was accused of forging a power disconnection notice to coerce a tenant into paying outstanding financial dues.
The court found the defendant guilty and sentenced him to one year in prison.
The court heard evidence from both the prosecution and the defense.
The prosecution presented the testimony of the complainant, who alleged that the defendant had sent him WhatsApp notifications purporting to be from the EWA, threatening to disconnect his power and water supply if he did not pay outstanding dues.
The complainant also presented an inspection report from the authority confirming that the notifications were forged.
The defense argued that the complainant had fabricated the charges against the defendant and that the latter had no motive to forge the notices, as he had obtained a court judgment for contract termination and eviction of the rented property.
Complaint The defense also pointed out that the complainant had illegally connected the electricity network, which led to a criminal complaint being filed against him.
However, the court found the prosecution’s evidence to be more persuasive and concluded that the defendant had forged the notices in an attempt to coerce the complainant into paying the outstanding dues.
The court sentenced the defendant to one year in prison for the crime of forgery.
The defendant has the right to appeal the court’s decision.
