The much-anticipated “Friendship Bridge” linking Bahrain and Qatar has returned to the public eye, with renewed media coverage and discussions.
This development holds the promise of new avenues for regional collaboration and economic growth.
The ambitious 34-km bridge is set to cut down travel time between the two countries from five hours to just 30 minutes, thereby facilitating trade, tourism, and investment.
The ensuing economic activity is anticipated to bring substantial benefits to both Bahrain and Qatar.
Seen as a key strategic project, the “Friendship Bridge” holds the potential to positively influence the economic path of the region.
It will act as a crucial link within the GCC, promoting closer ties and easing the movement of goods and people across the area.
Initially estimated to cost £1.8 billion in 2008, the project’s expense has now risen to approximately £2.4 billion.
Sound investment
Despite the increase, the bridge is considered a sound investment, with forecasts predicting it will handle 4,000 vehicles daily upon opening, rising to 5,000 the following year, and reaching 12,000 by 2050.
The idea of the Bahrain-Qatar Bridge dates back to 2006, with a memorandum of cooperation signed to create the link.
In 2008, the “Bahrain and Qatar Bridge” Foundation was established, bringing together officials from both nations to manage the project.
An international consortium, including French firm Vinci, German company Hochtief, and Greek company United Contractors, was initially chosen to build the bridge.
