LuLu Hypermarket brought alive a slice of Kerala with the Onam festivities inaugurated yesterday by the Indian Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain, His Excellency Vinod Jacob.

The inauguration offered a glimpse and a taste of the amazing Onam celebrations that the hypermarket has made possible, thanks to an array of specialty ingredients, a delicious PayasaMela that showcases Kerala’s best-loved desserts and puddings and a fashion blitz offering the popular half-payback vouchers for every BD10 spent.

Ambassador Jacob was welcomed by LuLu Group Director, Juzer Rupawala. He was greeted with the drumbeat of the Kerala chenda melam, a shower of flower petals, pookalam and the performing of the traditional Thiruvadhira dance performance, dancers in Kathakali costume and the Pulikali ‘tiger’ body paint.

There was also a Mahabali in full regalia to welcome the community. Every item needed to recreate the joyful Onam feeling is available in the best quality at LuLu.

Adventurous home-chefs can equip themselves with not just ingredients but also great offers on Chefline, Butterfly and other leading brands of kitchen accessories.

Best ingredients

You can purchase the best ingredients for an Onam feast at LuLu – traditional vegetables, fruit and specialty foods such as rice, jaggery, cashews and ghee.

There will be an exciting ‘Payasam’ contest on September 12 when local home chefs will vie for a top prize with their sweet creations for the festival.

Artistic celebrants can participate in the LuLu Pookalam contest on the same day and win prizes for the best floral decoration.

Just in time for your festive wardrobe, the popular LuLu Half Payback is here – you can choose from the latest fashions and ethnic wear including a wide range of “Onakodi”, the cream and gold-lace saree, ladies’ handbags, footwear and jewellery – clothing for all the family, toys, sports equipment and bicycles.

Shopping voucher

On spending BD10 on these items, you will get a shopping voucher worth BD5.

The LuLu PonnOnam festival runs till September 15th and everyday there will be a Payasa Mela, featuring delicious kheer or Payasam in different varieties.

The feast of Onam – the legendary Onasadhya – is the main attraction and pre-bookings are already taking place. Simply place your order with LuLu Customer Service at the nearest LuLu for the grand 22-course meal which costs BD2.390 and which will be prepared with care and culinary passion by LuLu’s expert chefs.

Collect the well-packed meals on September 15, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Discounts

The sumptuous meal costs just BD 2.490 and this year, there will be discounts on all Onam purchases across the board for LuLu Happiness Points customers.

The centrepiece of Onam celebrations is the Pookalam, beautiful floor designs created from flowers.

LuLu has stocked a wide variety of flowers to be purchased per kilo, so shoppers can pick and choose the colours they want. Rupawala wished all shoppers a happy Onam.

“Onam is today a wonderful multi-faith celebration which the whole of Kerala rejoices in – and in the Gulf, all Indians join Keralites for the cultural and culinary enjoyment while other nationalities see it as a window to the world of Indian festivals. As always, LuLu has gone the extra mile to make Onam a special occasion,” he said.
