On Sunday, the Shura Council will review a proposal to ratify the Digital Cooperation Organisation (DCO) charter, reinforcing Bahrain’s growing role in global digital collaboration.

The Foreign Affairs, Defence, and National Security Committee will present its report on the draft law tied to Decree No. 87 of 2024, which commits Bahrain to the DCO’s efforts.

Established in 2020 through the collaboration of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, and Pakistan, the DCO aims to foster closer global partnerships, particularly in digital development.

Bahrain’s annual contribution to the DCO’s budget is set at $50,000, part of a financial model that includes contributions from all member states. The Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications explained that the organisation seeks to improve collaboration on digital matters, enhance collective digital skills, support developmental goals, and drive innovation to improve quality of life.

Despite its youth, the DCO has already launched initiatives like the ‘Digital Prosperity Awards’ and the ‘Friends of the United Nations for Digital Cooperation’ group.

The Foreign Affairs, Defence, and National Security Committee has expressed support for the proposal, noting Bahrain’s established track record in technological advancement. They view membership as a natural step that will further Bahrain’s global collaboration and accelerate its digital transformation.

The committee also emphasised the DCO’s role in strengthening partnerships in health, education, trade, security, and technology.

The government’s memorandum underscored the importance of ratifying the charter, signed in Manama in 2020, as a response to rapid technological advancements. With 16 member states, the DCO aims to enhance international digital ties and promote knowledgesharing.

The Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications highlighted that the DCO’s initiatives are already driving collaboration, innovation, and improved living standards globally.
