Parliament is investigating a surge in business registrations by expatriates with no clear economic purpose, as MPs call for stricter oversight to prevent misuse of commercial licences.

A proposal by MPs Jalila Alawi, Dr Hisham Al Ashiri, Mohsen Al Asbool, Hassan Ebrahim, and Mohammed Al Olaiwi urges the Ministry of Industry and Commerce to monitor high-demand business sectors, identify underlying trends, and close loopholes that enable abuse.

MPs argue that the sharp rise in registrations, particularly in certain industries, suggests that licences are being obtained for purposes unrelated to genuine trade.

“The sudden rush for licences, especially among certain expatriate groups, raises concerns,” said Jalila Alawi. “There’s no clear legal or economic reason behind it. The ministry must investigate these patterns and act if necessary.”

Parliament’s Financial and Economic Affairs Committee has unanimously backed the proposal, saying tighter scrutiny of registrations would help prevent exploitation of the system.
