GPIC achievements in 2015 highlighted

The most important achievements of the Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company (GPIC) in 2015 were highlighted during the company’s 36th anniversary celebrations recently.

The ceremony was held under the patronage of the National Oil and Gas Authority (NOGA)'s Secretary General and GPIC Chairman Dr. Ahmed Al Sharayan.

Members of the Board of Directors, the Executive Management, representatives and members of its Labour Union, employees and retired workers were present at the event, during which the Company’s achievements during the year were reviewed.

The several Awards won by the Company and its various achievements during the year were highlighted and tributes were paid to the professional and dedicated efforts of all the workers who succeeded in implementing the strategies and balanced policies set up by the Board of Directors. These efforts contributed towards the Company achieving global recognition and in professionally facing challenges in global markets at all levels.

Dr. Jawahery welcomed the appointment of Dr. Al Sharayan as the Chairman of the Board of Directors and said the Company Management would continue to work on its strategies and policies and to maintain the same high standards that have contributed towards GPIC becoming one of the most advanced industrial companies in the region and a model of successful GCC cooperation.

Dr. Jawahery also thanked and appreciated the members of the Board of Directors for having attended the ceremony and honouring the Company's employees for their efforts in helping GPIC achieve global recognition during the year. Dr. Jawahery said he took pride in the Company’s celebrations coinciding with the National Day festivities and with celebrations marking His Majesty the King’s Accession Day. He congratulated Bahrain’s Leadership for harnessing all the capabilities of its people and creating a simulating atmosphere, which helped GPIC workers to give their best performance.

Dr. Jawahery said the proper approach and strategic planning of the Board of Directors and the commitment of the Executive Management, along with the members of the Labour Union, all employees and workers, were instrumental in the success of the Company.

He said there is no dearth of professional talent at the company and all employees and workers work together to ensure GPIC forever rides on a wave of success. He said the employees and workers are known for their professional excellence and knowledge related to the Petrochemical Industry and have never shied away from attending industry-specific conferences and workshops around the world to further enhance their skills and competence.

Dr. Jawahery also spoke about the several regional and international awards won by GPIC, the most prominent being the award for excellence in occupational health and safety given by the British Royal Society for Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA). The Company, he said, also won the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for excellence in business for the industrial category in the GCC and the prize for Arabic Social Responsibility 2015 granted by the Arabic Network for Social Responsibility. GPIC, he added, was also awarded an award of excellence for the best partnership programme and cooperation between the private and the public sector for its Company's role in the environment award programme for students.

He said GPIC was awarded the Bahrain e-Government Award for Excellence in the e-economy category, which is given to private enterprises that demonstrate the benefit of excellence in providing technology solutions and in support the Company's business. Dr. Jawahery pointed out that GPIC was the first in Bahrain to get the coveted ISO50001 power management certificate as well as the Gold Standard Excellence in human resources certificate, which was awarded to a GCC-based company for the first time ever. The Company also successfully renewed its Level 1 Gold System Status certificate for bulk in-ship after going thorough an examination by the Australian Government’s Quarantine and Inspection Foundation.

Dr. Jawahery thanked the Leaders of Gulf Cooperation (GCC) states for their contribution and assistance, which had made the GCC a global Company of excellence and an example of successful GCC cooperation.

Later, Dr. Al Sharayan, all Board Members and Dr. Jawahery honoured outstanding employees who demonstrated a great deal of commitment and dedication to work during the year, as well as those who have completed long years of continuous service. A dinner banquet followed after the award ceremony.

GPIC was founded on December 5, 1979 as a joint venture between three GCC countries for the manufacture of fertilizers and petrochemicals. The Government of Bahrain, the Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) and the Petrochemical Industries Company of Kuwait jointly own the Company.

GPIC uses natural gas available in Bahrain as the main raw material for the production of 1.4 million tonnes of ammonia, urea and methanol every year.

The company facility in Bahrain is built on 600,000 square meters of reclaimed land, and has factories and production facilities, maintenance workshops and offices in addition to the stores and laboratories. The company employs 500 people, 92 percent of its employees are Bahraini citizens.
