RCSI Bahrain launches stroke awareness video online
The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland – Medical University of Bahrain (RCSI Bahrain) yesterday marked the official launch of the F.A.S.T. stroke awareness video.
According to Senior Psychology Lecturer Dr Claire Donnellan’s findings, the incidence of stroke among Bahrainis has almost doubled since 1995 and with an ageing population, this trend is expected to continue.
Stroke patients in Bahrain were found to have a much higher prevalence of many of the risk factors for stroke – such as diabetes, hypertension and hyperlipidaemia – when compared with western comparators.
Produced by RCSI Bahrain, in conjunction with Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC) and Gulf Broadcast, the video is the first-of-its-kind for Bahrain and falls in line with the Ministry of Health’s opening of a dedicated stroke unit at SMC later this year.
The video is in Arabic – with English subtitles – and outlines the symptoms of stroke and how best to react in cases of stroke.
The video was uploaded on RCSI Bahrain’s YouTube channel, along with an appeal for people to check out and share the link: https://www.youtube.com/user/rcsibahrain.
