Canada unemployment rate falls to 6.9pc in May

Ottawa: Canada’s unemployment rate fell 0.2 percentage points to 6.9 per cent in May, the lowest in almost one year, the government statistical agency announced yesterday.

Nearly 14,000 jobs were added in the month, beating expectations, according to Statistics Canada.

The figures, however, understate the jobs situation as the agency was unable to collect data in the oil city of Fort McMurray, Alberta after wildfires displaced nearly 100,000 residents and oil workers.

Overall, full-time work increased by 61,000 in May, but the increase was partially offset by a decline of 47,000 part-time jobs.

More people were employed in public administration, construction, business, building and other support services, educational services, and manufacturing.

The wholesale and retail sector as well as health care and social assistance, and natural resources shed jobs.

The public sector added employees while there was “little change in the number of private sector and self-employed workers.

Analysts had forecast the creation of 1,000 net new jobs in the month.
